June 2005 Job Hazard Analysis Workshop

Word version of this document

On June 6 - 9, 2004, members of the Work Management subgroup met in Washington DC. Participants included representatives from Savanna River Site (SRS), Y-12 National Security Complex, Fluor Hanford, BWXT Pantex, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and CH2MHILL Hanford along with DOE-HQ representatives (EH-21). The focus of the meeting was on Job Hazard Analysis at the activity level in work management.

The purpose of the workshop was to explore the methods used across the complex and share with each other those practices of integrating Job Hazard Analysis into work management at the activity level. In keeping with our charter we wanted to identify a product that could be used by any facility in improving or developing processes for Job hazard analysis at the activity level.

The overall goal of the work shop was to emerge with a path forward for a document that aids the DOE Complex in its development or improvements in implementation of Job Hazard Analysis at the activity level. The intent of the team is to have the document ready by July 17th, 2005 in order to support the NNSA effort scheduled in later part of July 2005.

Summary of Work Shop results:

  • Decided that the product for this initiative would be a document that we have initially determined to be titled "Excellence in Job Hazard Analysis".
  • Each site provided an overview of their Job Hazard analysis process and the way that they use it in development of work instructions and procedures.
  • Decided on some of the common terms and their definitions, specifically (Task, Activity, Step, and Method of Implementation)
  • Developed a rough outline of the Excellence in Job Hazard Analysis product
  • Determined assignments for each of the sections of the outline.
  • Developed a schedule for assignments
  • Committed to communicate more with the other subgroups and work groups and invite liaisons from other groups to attend future workshops to maximize previous efforts and reduce duplication of efforts.
  • Decided that part of our assignments would be to write of lines of inquiry for use in assessing our effectiveness in implementation of the topics covered in the Excellence of Job Hazard Analysis document.

Assignments agreed to in the workshop and the schedules for their completion are as follows:

CH2MHILL Hanford - Tony Jennings, Randy Cook
