About New Mexico and Santa Fe

Before "Land of Enchantment" became the state slogan, New Mexico went by the nickname, "The Sunshine State" - based on the fact that every part of New Mexico receives at least 70 percent sunshine year-round. With a state as large as New Mexico, though, climate varies considerably from one place to the next. Snowfall ranges from less than 2 inches annually in the lower Rio Grande Valley to as much as 300 inches in the mountains of north central New Mexico. (Source: http://www.newmexico.org/)

Santa Fe is located in a valley formed by the Rio Grande or "Great River," bordered on the west by the volcanic Jemez Mountains and on the east by the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains. At an elevation of 7,000 feet above sea level, the environment is technically in the "Transition Zone" based on elevation and rainfall – with four very distinct seasons. The altitude may take a little getting used to and the general rule of thumb is to "take it easy." Don't overexert, pace yourself, avoid overeating or indulging in alcohol and caffeine, and give yourself about 24 hours to get adjusted. (Source: http://www.santafe.org/)
