Special Review of the Workplace Safety and Security Programs at the Argonne Site

On April 29, 2005, a Special Review Team (Team) was appointed to examine the workplace safety and security programs in place at the Argonne site. This review was prompted as a result of the April 21, 2005, suicide of a Department of Energy federal employee that occurred at the Argonne site. In directing this review, we have requested the Team to report on two key objectives: (1) to ensure the effectiveness of existing workplace safety and physical security programs at the Argonne site to adequately protect the safety, health, and well-being of site personnel; and (2) to identify recommendations and lessons learned from this tragedy for Argonne and for the rest of the DOE complex to improve existing processes and to develop strategies for early detection, prevention, and intervention in the future.
